Artist’s Statement
I choose to work in clay because of its unique immediacy. Form is my primary vehicle of communication, although sometimes surface texture, oxides and stains can assist identification, particularly with my birds. I am a committed member of RSPB and support their crucial work preserving and protecting nature and biodiversity. I share the conviction that our legacy is nature’s future.
My pieces vary in scale because, although I generally create human forms at ¼ scale, my portraits and British birds are life size- to the extent that they will fit in my kiln!
All pieces are unique and most are raku fired. This process requires surrender to the ‘kiln gods’, who sometimes wreak vengeance! The alchemy of flame is the final stage of what is, for me, an elemental process.
