Although I have now retired from a career in landscape architecture and arboriculture I continue to express my love of nature and landscape through the medium of stone carving.
I was initially inspired to take up carving by visiting a sculptor during open studios week in Stroud, Gloucestershire, over 20 years ago.
Now based in Colyton, East Devon the stone I use is sourced from Portland in Dorset. Portland limestone was formed 145 to 150 million years ago, in a warm, shallow sea, during the late Jurassic period and has the ideal properties of being both hard wearing and easy to work.
I use a mallet and chisels and the sculptures are finished with an abrasive paper, which often reveals a subtle and unexpected pattern of minute fossils in the finished piece.
My work is a mix of abstract and figurative forms, often with an avian or botanical theme and is suitable for both indoor and outside locations.
