Artist’s Statement
In stone carving I found my material, my passion and my Self.
The main body of my work in Portland stone is figurative, often abstract and focusing on life and spirituality.
Ten years ago, I took part in a series of stone carving courses with Maria Moorhouse. I can’t imagine now a life without being able to carve stone. This ancient natural material inspires and drives me to discover its possibilities. The whole process is arduous and challenging but deeply fulfilling. This ancient expressive form of creativity is rhythmic and meditative, and the process full of life lessons.
My art has been my therapy through difficult times and an inspiration for my soul. The works of Modigliani, Rodin and Brancusi as well as a fascination for the sculptures of antiquity, notably Asian Buddhist art have all had an influence on the visions and meanings in my work.
Natural materials like crystals, fossils and gold leaf are often incorporated into my sculptures.
Inspired by nature the organic shell like forms make beautiful ornaments. Whilst an exploration into new stone types has lead to a love of carving various sea life and animals like Sea turtles, Manta rays and Stingrays.
