Artist’s Statement
Having studied Art to Post Graduate Diploma (distinction) , inspired by the Land Artists of the 60s and contemporary artists , Cornelia Parker, Anslem Kieffer my main interest lays in issues relating to man kinds polarised relationship with nature. Working in nature with nature using only natural found materials to express conceptual ideas, creating a dialogue with the onlooker, nature and myself to address issues of humankinds loss of connection to all life on earth, particularly relevant in our age the Anthropocene the age of the fifth mass distinction in the history of planet.
Natural materials bring a certain strength, truth and simplicity to my works through the recycling processes of nature, a frequent yet subtle sense. In contrast rich colour adds poignancy and confrontation in addressing environmental issues. The medium used depends on the particular concept ranging from plants, leaves, soil, soot, ash, stones, pigments, seaweed, twigs and other natural debris.
Papermaking is the base of my practice having learnt traditional Eastern and Western paper making techniques from Master Paper Makers, which has lead me to develop my own unique method. Producing series which often evolve into installations, often conquering up the aesthetic of the ” Sublime “ .
