Exeter Explodes with Creativity

June 9, 2021

Exeter announces a NEW and exciting exhibition in the cultural heart of the city.In collaboration with South West Sculptors, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country will become a contemporary art gallery for the entire summer. Rich with carvings, corbels and imagination, what better venue than Exeter Cathedral to showcase South West Sculptors latest work?

Join the South West Sculptors in their exploration of ‘Density and Lightness’.  This is an exhibition reflecting the sculptors’ reactions to the recent changes we have all experienced. ‘Density and Lightness’ also invites you to get to know the art of the Cathedral more intimately.

Did you know there was a cleric poking his tongue out in the Lady Chapel or a dog doing something unspeakable? Travel from transept to chapel and from quire to garden and discover contemporary creations and ancient carvings you never knew existed. Visit to discover these unexpected residents along with more than seventy-five new sculptures by twenty-four of the region’s most talented artists.

Martin Staniforth has been developing the exhibition for over 2 years and is bursting with enthusiasm: "The grandeur of the Cathedral is stunning.  With the added vibrancy of the sculptures and art workshops we hope we can rekindle your sense of wonder. We hope city shoppers can take an extra hour to join our sculptors, rediscover the history that makes our City so great and take home a cherished memory”.

Running alongside the exhibition are workshops, dance performances and art tours by leading experts. You can even take a piece of the wonder home with you as most exhibited sculptures are for sale.  For those wanting a gift, there will also be an art stall selling smaller works by the sculptors. So come and join in the celebration of "Density and Lightness" from 12 June to 30 August as Exeter re-emerges!
