Artist’s Statement

I have spent much of the last decade exploring my physical and mental limits Channel swimming, including the English Channel and becoming the first person ever to swim from Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly. I relished the challenge of immersing myself in an adventure and using my whole body to challenge what was possible.

I began my ceramics journey on the wheel making functional pottery but once again, love seeing what is possible which led me to start to sculpt and I like to highlight the natural material of clay and enjoy exploring the relationship between artist and viewer with markings left by the hands of the maker.

My pieces are mostly figurative and draw on the emotional charge held in the torso, the posture, devoid of the standard expressive face and hands. A life battling with health and wellness in mind and body is exposed and offers a chance to see strength and beauty in intimate studies. I mostly use sagger firing with collected organics and combustibles alongside broderie anglaise soaked in oxides to mimic
tattoos and scars.
