Artist’s Statement

Following a career in education, teaching and lecturing, and a family of three children, since 1999 I have developed designs in metal and other resistant materials. A most influential period was when I lived, cruise-sailing on catamarans and mono-hulls, and I now translate those experiences into my art and design to form signature pieces. I aim to express an empathy with nature, its beauty and its infinite energy.

I exhibit regularly to promote this work and welcome proposals for collaboration with architects and interior designers. I specialise in the use of pewter and other resistant materials, to make commanding contemporary interior and exterior wall sculptures.

In competition I won the Neish award in 2011 for my design for a Table Centre Piece, made to an open brief, for the Worshipful Company of Pewterers. This was a new venture, to make a large casting - 32cm diameter. From 2012, I have developed mark-making skills with gold leaf on pewter, combining it with other chemicals.

In another role I work in our family business, Alastair Guy Playgrounds, in which we design play environments and outdoor structures. I also make sculpture with wood - stimulated by beautiful natural forms that I encounter.
